The crash took place around 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on Seely Road, Wilton Police said.
A passerby reported the crash and when officers arrived on the scene there was no one in the vehicle. After a brief search of the area, police located Robert J. Polo, 54, of Wilton on Cannon Road walking toward Hurlbutt Street, police said.
While speaking with Polo, officers detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage, and his words were slurred and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot, police said.
He admitted to having been involved in the collision and explained that he left the scene because he was scared.
Polo refused to submit to the standardized field sobriety tests and would later refuse a breath test, they added.
He was arrested and charged with evading responsibility/property damage, driving under the influence, failure to keep right, and operating a vehicle with a handheld device (phone).
He was released after posting a $260 bond. Polo is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 18.
